App Onboarding Journey
Nibble Apps:
Creators of a range of highly successful food and fitness iOS apps.
Their app have celebrated reaching #1 in the Apple App Store in the Food & Drink category.
I was brought in to provide design and UX consultation and updates to the existing app’s framework, including a brand new Onboarding Journey for the FitPlan app.
A selection of screens:
The original problem:
The app didn’t have a thoughtful onboarding journey, and relied on users accessing their personalised metrics through the settings in their app.
It led to a frustrating an unclear experience, and the need was identified to create a helpful onboarding experience for app users.
The process:
I worked remotely with the app owner to decide on the flow of the screens through collaborative wireframes, followed by creating a look and feel that offered a dynamic and engaging first experience of the app.
The app itself was designed by an external designer, and was in need of updates, so I was keen to find a transitional solution that nodded closely to the existing UI, but started to pave the way for what was to come in future iterations.
References were found for interaction animations, and the app moved into development.
The solution:
A clean and ‘strong’ UI was created using a ‘dark mode’ inverted interface with punches of neon teal and italicised Calls to Action.
We decided on a ‘snackable’, chunked-up approach that pulled the user through the journey, making each stage feel manageable and the task less daunting or overwhelming.
To aid this, hint text was peppered throughout.
Testing the concept:
Some screens had variations that were tested against, which informed the future design approach for the app.
The success:
Unfortunately I no longer have the specific test results for this project, but engagement in the personalisation of the app’s settings naturally increased, resulting in a subsequent increase in user retention.
